Details:Mission and objectives:UN-Habitat is the United Nations program working for a better urban future. Its mission is to promote the socially and environmentally sustainable development of human settlements and access to decent housing for all.Context:This volunteering opportunity is supported by the Embassy of Switzerland in Tunisia in the framework of the initiative launched in partnership with UNV in December 2023 to foster youth and disability inclusion through meaningful and impactful volunteering assignments with the United Nations between 2024 and 2026.The UN Volunteer will serve as an Urban Economics Assistant within the Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure in Tunis. The Ministry is dedicated to fostering sustainable economic development within urban areas, aiming to address socio-economic disparities, promote job creation, and enhance the overall quality of life for urban residents.Task description:Under the direct supervision of M. Abderrazak Chiha, Director of Urbanism and the delegated representative from UN-HABITAT, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:1. Conduct research and analysis on urban economic trends, dynamics, and challenges in Tunisia, focusing on urban issues.
2. Assist in the formulation of programs to promote sustainable economic growth and development within urban areas, in alignment with national development goals and priorities.
3. Assist in the design of targeted interventions and incentives to support the growth of key economic urban sectors, such as tourism, manufacturing, services, and creative industries, within urban areas.
4. Assist in conducting cost-benefit analyses, feasibility studies, and economic impact assessments for proposed urban infrastructure projects and investment opportunities.
5. Assist on Facilitating capacity-building activities and training workshops for Ministry staff and relevant stakeholders on urban economic concepts, tools, and methodologies.
6. Contribute to the preparation of reports, policy briefs, and other communication materials to disseminate economic analysis findings and policy recommendations.Requirements:
  • Knowledge in economic analysis, modeling, and forecasting techniques.
  • Analytical and quantitative skills for interpreting complex economic data and trends.
  • Familiarity with urban economic theories, policies, and strategies.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills for engaging with diverse stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of national and international economic development frameworks, policies, and initiatives.

Required education level:Bachelor degree or equivalentOther information: The position is based in Tunis, Tunisia.While the local office and workspace strive to maintain accessibility standards, there are some areas for improvement. Currently, there are no braille signs available to assist visually impaired individuals in navigation. Additionally, restroom facilities do not have grab bars installed. However, the office remains wheelchair accessible, with ramps and elevators provided for mobility support. The workspace is well-lit and free from physical barriers, ensuring ease of movement within the premises. Efforts are underway to address these deficiencies and enhance accessibility for all volunteers, including those with disabilities.
